Race is the historical term because it is ancient, and preceded the age is sail and subsequent age of Darwin and our discovery that there were only a few human species from which all others are hybrids. It is also a remnant of Christian dogma that demanded total separation of man from animals.
A trivial survey of taxonomic names exposes that the races are alone not labeled species.

Btw: only falsehoods require social construction. Truths require only adoption. This is why the term social construction means lying.
