“Residues and Derivations”
Vilfredo Pareto, in his sociological theory, used the terms “residues and derivations”.
“Residues” are the persistent and consistent psychological traits that drive human behavior.
“Derivations” are the ideologies and beliefs that people construct to justify or rationalize their actions.
This theory is an attempt to delve into the underlying causes of human actions, separating the innate drives (residues) from the constructed narratives (derivations).
