That’s simply not true. It’s an excuse. The Chinese and Soviets were atheists for all intents and purposes. Two thirds of the public are now irreligious. it will hit 1/4 or less in the current generation.

Instead, as population increases, and anonymity and alienation increase, religion attempts to satisfy the sense of alienation by providing a narrative excuse and social rituals of confirmation.

Religion is literally therapy.

The question is why we haven’t developed a non-false religion other than stoicism. The answer is that stoicism requires more training, agency, and responsibility while religion absolves you of that responsibility.

It’s worse for women.
