It’s not quite true.
True in that the individual will report the reasons for his success incorrectly, as one of volition. And true in the sense that one must be in the right place at the right time.
False in that the capacity to work extraordinarily hard for days, weeks, months, or years, while tolerating frustration yet enjoying the stress of competition is the principle advantage no matter what field appears to be partly genetic and partly an outlier property of personality and development.

In other words success in academy and industry is indifferent from success in sports: largely endurance.
