FWIW: I gave a talk somewhat regularly in the late 00s about identities fracturing into portfolios by which we develop means of safety, certainty, fulfillment, and status seeking because the middle class majority consumer economy had been achieved, so the only solution was fragmentation. I described each of us collecting identity cars in the then-popular analogy to “Magic The Gathering” collector cars.

So what is identity? people who use the same status signals as I do. And as such people I can most likely cooperate with on means, if not always ends.
