Conflating different functions of perception(sensation, disambiguation, organization, dimensionality) and auto association (imagination).
While there are some people without inner voice or inner vision, most of us adjust our attention between perception and imagining (dreaming). Some of us (a verysmall number, largely autistic) live in world entirely of perception and sensation with little sense of self. Some of us live in a world with overemphasis of self. Some of us perceive the world as primarily dream state, some of us a blend of imagination and perception, and some of us largely perception that we deliberately toggle back to imagination as needed. In other words, just as our brain stem manages physical homeostasis, the relationship between our brain stem and our thalamus regulate a homeostasis between dream, blend, and perception. But this is nothing more than the normal behavior of the thalamus in regulating what is raised to our level of awareness (attention). And because all humans believe we are the yardstick by which to measure everything, we always demonstrate normalcy bias assuming everyone perceives and experiences life the same. We dont’ We simply perceive and experience it marginally indifferently for the purpose of physical action in real time and space. After that our consistency and correspondence decline rapidly such that some people are living largely in an imaginary rather than perceptually predictive world – and are frustrated by it. Add feminine magical thinking, or a bit of neuroticism and you have people who are very ‘spiritual’ so to speak.
