We don’t really know what happened during the Bronze Age Collapse but afterwards we see that the Northern Canaanites developed a sea-ward looking identity and started calling themselves Phoenician, while the southern canaanites started developing a new religion, putting their warrior god, Yahweh, at the top of the pantheon (still not monotheistic), organized themselves into comparatively larger kingdoms as opposed to city-states (which the Phoenicians still retained despite having a larger national identity) and calling themselves Israelites.

Even then, they were more similar than different. They still spoke the same language, though now their dialects were more distinct, had similar lifestyles, had a sense of solidarity with each other often uniting to fight foreign enemies and rarely fighting each other, and had similar pottery and architectural styles. In fact Solomon’s famous temple was largely constructed by hired Phoenician craftsmen, which shows the close cooperation that occurred between the two groups. The northern and coastal Israelite tribes also had the same maritime culture of the Phoenicians. While they were clearly different nationalities by this point, it is quite clear that they still belonged to the same Canaanite civilization, something that they themselves seemed to recognize.”-
