Trade produces demand for writing and numbers.
Proto writing on clay (primitive accounting) was common even in the neolitic.
Proto Writing evolved prior to the minoans or greeks in Old Europe.
Writing may have independently developed in at least four ancient civilizations: Mesopotamia (between 3400 and 3100 BCE), Egypt (around 3250 BCE). China (1200 BCE),and lowland areas of Mesoamerica (by 500 BCE).
The first systemic writing appears to have been in Uruk.
The phonecians produced the efficient means of writing symbols for phonemes rather than pictographic syllables, words, or concepts. This provided the most utilitarian menthod with the least variation for the maximum precision in orders, contracts, inventory, and accounting.
This technology spread fast – with late mover advantage (It’s harder to change existing systems like egyptian than to invent anew mesopotamian, greek, or etruscan)
We still aren’t QUITE sure if Futhark evolved from greek, roman, or a combined origin.
