Truth can cause humor, it can cause joy, it can enlighten, or it can cause to question, or it can cuause reflection, or it can cause adaptation, or it can hurt, or can offend, or it can cause denial, or projection, or undermining, or outraging, gossiping, shaming, ridiculing, psychologizing, moralizing. But mostly, as in your case it causes lying and denying. Because you are hurt, offended, and so denying the truth. 😉
